World Polio Day
October 24 is World Polio Day!
Clubs are asked to register and plan events around the live broadcast at 6:00 PM from the US Centers for Disease Control. Go to www.endpolio.org to register. Funding the final push to finish off polio is more urgent than ever as Nigeria has been placed back on the endemic country list.
Overall good progress has been made with only 26 cases year to date, but unfortunately we have had three cases in Nigeria and has returned to the list of polio-endemic countries, following the World Health Organization’s confirmation of three cases of wild poliovirus in the northeastern state of Borno in August. While this news is disappointing, there has been significant progress toward ending polio in Nigeria, the rest of the African continent, and globally. There are two excellent articles in this month’s Rotarian magazine on polio.
