Program and speaker who spoke on Veterans Day at Huntersville Happy Hour
- Recommended by PDG Bob Wilson
We are always looking for GREAT programs to inspire and inform our clubs. I’ve got a good one to recommend for your consideration. The speaker is a retired, three-star Lieutenant General, USAF, a pilot in Nam, Squadron Commander, Base Commander, and an excellent fighter pilot who helped in the early and ongoing development of the F-15 Eagle. His last assignment was as Commander US Forces, Japan (USFJ) and Commander 5th Air Force at Yokota Air Base, Japan. Previously he was the Director of Air and Space Operations for Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) and was responsible for ensuring the combat capabilities of USAF assets assigned to PACAF. On the morning of the 11th of September 2001 following the terrorists’ attacks in the CONUS, he was one of three Air Force General Officers assigned the mission of command for the air sovereignty over the airspace structure in the United States, OPERATION NOBLE EAGLE. His unvarnished perspective on many recent events, policies and politics is riveting and will galvanize your audience. General Waskow offers several programs, one which addresses the response that he coordinated in delivering humanitarian relief to those people ravaged by the Tsunami that struck Indonesia in 2004. You might recall that Rotary was also involved in this same relief effort, providing thousands of Shelter Boxes and other emergency aid. Check out the article in this month’s Rotarian Magazine about the Hospital that we helped to rebuild after the Tsunami hit. Tom has several program offerings. His topics include: * US military support to the Tsunami in Indonesia 2004 * The evolution of air combat training from Vietnam to the present * My hosting of President Bush (41) when he returned to Japan to celebrate the anniversary of his being shot down during WWII at ChiChi Jima * The USO of NC * My responsibilities during 9/11 (This was his program at Huntersville, Happy Hour….excellent) He is informative, humorous and communicates with both words and pictures. Three- star General Waskow received his bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the Air Force Academy and his Masters degree in business. He also was a Senior Executive Fellow at Harvard and a Seminar XXI Fellow at MIT.
